Email refused: hourly sending limit

1 minute readUpdated 19 Oct 2026

If your emails bounce back saying your domain has “exceeded the max emails per hour”, you’ve hit your hosting account’s sending limit. Here’s why, and what to do.

What the limit is

Each hosting account can send 100 emails an hour. That’s for all your mailboxes and your website together, not each one. The bounce looks like this:

Domain yourdomain.ae has exceeded the max emails per hour (125/100 (125%)) allowed. Message discarded.

Emails over the limit are not sent later.

They’re discarded. Once the hour has passed, send them again.

Why it happens

  • Sending to a big list, such as a newsletter or a group email to all your customers.
  • Your website sending email, such as contact forms, order emails or a plugin.
  • A mailbox that’s been hacked and is sending spam without you knowing.

What to do

  1. Wait an hour

The count resets on its own. Then resend anything that bounced.

  2. Check you’re not hacked

If you didn’t send that many emails, change every mailbox password straight away. See Change or reset an email password.

  3. Use a newsletter service for big lists

Mailing lists belong on a newsletter service, not your mailbox. They’re built for it and keep your own email trusted.
