Databases: create, import and export

1 minute readUpdated 19 Oct 2026

Most websites, including WordPress, keep their content in a database. Here’s how to create one, bring one in from another host, and take a copy.

Create a database

  1. Open Manage My Databases

In cPanel, open Manage My Databases. Database names start with your cPanel username and an underscore.

  2. Create the database

Type a name under Create New Database and click Create Database.

  3. Create a user and give it access

Further down, add a database user with a strong password, then add that user to the database with All Privileges.

Prefer step by step?

The Database Wizard in cPanel does all three in one go.

Import a database

  1. Open phpMyAdmin

    In cPanel, open phpMyAdmin.

  2. Select your database

Click the database on the left. It should be empty.

  3. Import the file

Open the Import tab, choose your .sql file and click Go.

Export a copy

In phpMyAdmin, select the database, open the Export tab, keep the Quick method and SQL format, and click Go. You can also download database backups from JetBackup.
